Hi Dave, thanks for stopping by. I think the way they manage that dam is shameful. I guess that makes it Dam shameful. I've heard other stories like yours of mis-timed landings in that area and the death march through the mud... It's gotta be terrible.

Unfortunately I can't provide any additional insight other than what I've provided in the article.

I can tell you that this January I am going to begin making an issue of the matter with GA power. I don't think that its asking too much of a company to provide public access to a schedule as they are managing a public resource.

I'm going to try to enlist the help of paddlers such as yourself as well as the fishing community. If I can I also plan on getting some of the local shops involved.

Hopefully common sense will prevail.

I will certainly post updates on this site.

I canoe Bull Sluice Lake and put in at a small parking lot at Timber Ridge Rd and Willeo Rd. There is a shallow backwater here, and when Morgan Falls Dam is releasing, the water level gets so low you can't get your canoe in or out. You end up walking through thigh-deep mud. It's very frustrating. I haven't been able to figure out Morgan Falls' release schedule. Any thoughts?

Hi Brent,

Congrats on trying to make this shift. I transitioned to being a early riser a few years back. The biggest thing you can do to improve the probability of success is go to bed at the same time everyday. For me I set an alarm for 10pm at which time I head to bed for 30 minutes of reading, I use a dawn and dusk simulator like a lumie http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00196LFIU/caveklau-20 I set the dusk to a 30 min cycle and it gradually gets darker when I can't read I go to sleep. In the morning my room gets brighter and brighter from 5.30-6am I usually wake around 5.45am and the room is really bright, if I don't wake naturally like this at the best point in my REM cycle then the alarm goes at 6am as a fall back. I suggest trying this out it made the difference for me. I also do a 20 minute nap around 2pm.

Bacteria levels within a mile downstream of Buford Dam is generally not an issue as the river water comes from the bottom of Lake Lanier where it is cold (50 degrees) and devoid of bacteria life. However, there is much runoff during heavy rainfalls between this area and downstream to Morgan Falls. This area is subject to high bacteria levels <del datetime="2011-08-29T21:40:23+00:00">contrary to what the author states</del> (I've updated it). Also, during water releases from Buford Dam you are prohibited from entering the river immediately below the dam due to the danger.
